Remove those up and down arrows.

You’ll notice a number of applications lately have been ditching the scroll bar arrows (such as Adobe Media Player). Personally, this makes me happy, as I never seem to use them. It also makes everything look a little more modern. However, don’t forget your end user may well be expecting them, so it’s not suitable in every case to remove them.

In order to remove them from your Flex application simply set the css style as this:

ScrollBar
{
	up-skin-arrow:ClassReference(null);
	down-skin-arrow:ClassReference(null);
}

View Application

View Source

One thing worth mentioning is when you’re designing your assets, keep in mind that the track and thumb have the same scale-nine settings (at least in CSS design view). Keep yourself sane and make sure you use the same png dimensions for track, thumb-up / over / down. Mine are all set to 16 x 16 pixels.
